What’s Your Definition Of Success? Live On Your Own Terms!

The main message I want to emphasize today is that SUCCESS is subjective, meaning that it depends on who or what we are talking about because it varies from person to person. If you are ready to define your own success, today’s episode is for you!

I believe we are all uniquely designed with strengths and weaknesses that make us one of a kind. Think about that, if we all have different abilities, what makes us think our path to success should look exactly like someone else’s?

The main message I want to emphasize today is that SUCCESS is subjective, meaning that it depends on who or what we are talking about because it varies from person to person. If you are ready to define your own success, today’s episode is for you!

See, the thing is that as we grew up, we learned through the expectations of others, and in some cases, probably had them guiding us to what success looks like.

Anyone have baby boomer parents who touted the college path as the only way to be successful and that you had to do better than they did?

While I believe these intentions were good, the truth is, not everyone is cut out for college. At that, not everyone is cut out for a traditional career path, or entrepreneurship, or parenthood - you get my drift?

We are all uniquely designed with strengths and weaknesses that make us one of a kind.

Think about that, if we all have different abilities, what makes us thing our path to success should look exactly like someone else's?

Seems silly now doesn’t it?

Let’s make this even more clear. Say my goal as a career strategist is to make $5,000 per month, yet, you only want to earn $1,000 because that is what you need to have a little extra fun money.

Fantastic! Now that just means that my goals to earn money will be more aggressive then yours might be. And because you earned $1,000 while I earned $5,000 - it doesn’t make you less successful.

Ultimately, it doesn’t make you less worthy. Let me repeat that. If our goals are not the same, it does not make either of us LESS WORTHY.

I believe there is a common misconception that happens related to success. It’s not just about the success itself, its that we have a sense of loss with how worthy we are.

That is just bogus and we need to learn to steer clear of that false perception.

Jo Schmo down the street may want to be a millionaire and that makes him feel successful and happy.

Well guess what, I’m not aiming for that goal at this stage of my life. Does that make me less worthy? Am I not successful because I’m not achieving that?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!

And this is completely true for you as well. So the next time you find yourself feeling down about what you see as someone else's “success” compared to you own - remember this:

  1. Comparison is the thief of your joy and potential - if you don’t follow me on social media - go over to Facebook/IG and you will see a very vulnerable post I shared about my own struggle with comparisonitis.

  2. Stop defining your success to what someone else is working towards. Maybe they only want to lose 5 pounds while your trying to lose 25. There is no comparison, success is personally defined by you.

  3. STOP worrying about what everyone one else says or expects you to do to be successful. Are they living your life, are they dealing with your exact situation, will they bail you out if all fails because you followed their advice? More than likely I’m guessing you are saying NO so stop making everything about them and start focusing on what you want out of your life and career. No matter what you do, guess what, people are going to judge anyways, so you may as well do what brings you joy and excites you on YOUR OWN TERMS.

  4. Lastly, take some time to reflect, either grab a notebook to jot down what are the core values in your life that you want to set as the foundation or grab my values freebie that I’m linking in the notes so that you can do an exercise that will help you with work through this. Honestly, if you don’t know the things that ultimately matter to you and set up some boundaries around them, then guess what, no one else will respect them and will tell you how you should be living your life. Since you are here listening to this show that’s all about busting down the fear barrier, breaking the mold and thinking outside the box like the inner rebel that you are - then I know you are NOT okay with anyone else telling you what to do.

I really hope these tips have been helpful to you and that if these things have been helping you, please share about the show so we can continue to grow and help other women facing these same challenges. It’s my passion to help women on their transition journeys full of confidence and by designing a plan that is customized for them. Otherwise, we are just aimlessly wandering around with no direction and little satisfaction. I’m here to change that and I am honored to be on that journey with you. If you are feeling stuck, then please remember that I thrive in helping you through this journey and we can grab a strategy session to create your own roadmap.

Before I wrap up, today’s quote comes from your’s truly. It’s more-so a thought I had a few weeks ago and it stuck out as I was selecting which quote to use for today:

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To that, I say - success is in the eye of the beholder.
