The Joy Is In The Journey, Not The Destination!

Today, I’ve got a topic that I really hope you take some time to reflect on how it may be applicable and possibly true in your own life and career.

See, I think we spend most of our lives seeking this “final destination”, to achieve that grand thing, to earn a “status”, to create generational wealth, to check off a bucket list and so on. The question I have, is while we are working so feverishly to seek and attain these things, are we genuinely enjoying the process to get there? Or are we so focused on the end result that we forget to savor the moments and truly enjoy it?

If this question is triggering you, then good, I truly hope today’s message will get you to think, reflect, and possibly take advantage of ACTUALLY enjoying the journey.

I am over the top excited to announce something SUPER special…..buckle your seat belt and let’s go on a joy ride ladies!

Welcome back to the show friends!

Earlier this week I read a message from my John Maxwell Daily Reader Book that echos this message so well. It’s titled:

Give Today Your Attention - and it states….

I love what former First Lady Barbara Bush said about the future, comparing it to a train ride:

We get on board that train at birth, and we want to cross the continent because we have in mind that somewhere out there is a station. We pass by sleepy little towns looking out the window of life’s train, grain fields and silos, level grade crossings, buses full of people on the roads beside us. We pass by cities and factories, but we don’t look at any of it because we want to get to the station…This station changes for us during life. To begin with, for most of us, it’s turning 18, getting out of high school. Then the station is that first promotion and then the station becomes retirement and then…all too late we recognize the truth - that this side of that city whose builder is God, there really isn’t a station. The joy is in the journey and the journey is joy.

Sooner or later, you realize there is no station and the truth of life is the trip. Read a book, eat more ice cream, go barefoot more often, hug a child, go fishing, laugh more. The station will come soon enough. And as you go, find a way to make this world more beautiful.

Focusing on the destination is not a good idea. Tomorrow may come; it may not. The only place we really have any power is in the present.

Wow, what an impactful message! Pretty powerful isn’t it?

Let’s be honest here, I am guilty of having this happen to me. I sometimes get so focused on the end game that I forget about the steps in between. I don’t think any of us are immune.

As an example, when we were on our road trip, it was easy to get lost in worrying more about the outcome of arriving to each new state. We spent miles and miles and hours and hours traveling. There were some pretty long stretches and it became exhausting at times, where we just wanted to finally arrive. The good ole “are we there yet” chant was ringing in our minds.

Where I choose to find the silver lining is in realizing it wasn’t about the check mark we would get by reaching each state, it was about the car ride. As a family, we talked about our dreams. We laughed at silly billboards we saw along the way. We played road trip games and had a fun competition….which I won by the way!

See, it wasn’t about a landmark moment to say tah-dah we ARRIVED, it was about what we experienced and gained on our way there. This trip was full of so much growth and was eye opening in many ways. Let’s just say my daughter is fired up about college, moving out of state (sadly away from her parents), and simply experiencing life.

In her own words, it made her realize just how much more is out there to experience and it made her want to get out of the comforts she is used to.

Hearing her say that honestly impacted me deeply. It made me realize my little girl is not so little anymore. It was also a reminder to stop being so fixated on her getting her license or graduating high school and instead soak in each precious moment I have with her still being here at home. My question to you is, what are you RUSHING through in your own life and career, that you aren’t even enjoying???

Using her as my motivation over the years has been truly the most rewarding experience of my life. She is using all the things she has learned, looked at this opportunity with a whole new perspective, and is designing her own road map. I couldn’t be prouder and more grateful to be her Mom.

I think we can all take a lesson from my 16 year old to realize we can no longer let fear dominate us. Here you have this young girl, who will graduate before turning 17 and is anxious to explore the world.

She is ready to release the reigns of comfort to try new things and truly experience life.

I remember when I was that age, I felt fearless and invincible. As I’ve gotten older, I find myself being more cautious and inevitably, limiting my decisions based on what is “safe”.

The truth is, in order to grow and to fully experience the journey, we need to allow ourselves the opportunity to push beyond our comfort zones and stretch ourselves just a tiny bit to get the ball rolling.

I know it’s not easy and it feels uncomfortable. But just like I started today’s episode with, don’t you feel like it’s time to actually enjoy the journey versus just targeting this ONE destination with no pleasure?

If you are shaking your head yes, then I have something EXTREMELY EXCITING to share with you!!!!

Ladies, I knew I wanted to bring value and impact to the world in as many ways as possible and I am on my journey to figuring out how. Then it hit me, I can expand upon the content here on the show by bringing you another resource.
