Holding Onto A “Secure Job”? Why It May Be Hurting You!
Friends, it’s time to draw a line in the sand and claim your intentions! If we are holding on to what feels like security, we are potentially hurting our opportunities by resisting growth. If you are ready for more, today’s episode is for you.
Did you realize that holding onto “security” is actually harming you????? Yes, you heard that right!
This can relate to a career and also our personal lives. For today, I want to focus on the career aspect.
If there is anything this pandemic has taught a lot of us is that job security is not so secure anymore. Layoffs, remote work, and so on has really opened up our eyes to see how the landscape of what a career looks like may be changing.
While it may seem hard to believe or not practical, I am going to give you a couple examples that I hope will help you see how this may be true in your career.
Let’s say tomorrow you get laid off. From one moment to the next your entire life has changed. If you depended solely on that one income, this could be detrimental. Whereas if you allowed yourself space to consider that you could do consultant work, start your own business, begin a hobby you could monetize and so on, your ability to handle this impact would be much more doable. Right?
What I’m saying is that rather than put all your eggs in one basket with this “secure j-o-b”, you in fact can lessen the damage, potentially find something new you love, and have flexibility beyond what’s expected in your career.
Looking at this from this perspective gives you an opportunity to expand your potential instead of being meyered down in this j-o-b because someone else told you it was a good idea.
The next thing is to allow yourself to explore and see if that full time career is really meeting your needs now that you have this new thing in front of you. Maybe you can consider doing your job part time and your new venture part time. This way you are not tied to the outcome that your employer deems necessary for your career.
And the final thing that I hope helps shift your perspective, is that when we are holding onto security and the past, we feel like we are in limbo. We aren’t sure how to move from one thing to the next because we are stuck between these two spaces. This makes it challenging and quite frankly, becomes overwhelming.
There has to come a point in time where we make the decision to start looking at new opportunities and in some cases fully take a leap of faith. I know that is not for everyone and we all have our own set of circumstances . What I am saying is that you need to stop playing mind tricks on yourself, stop allowing your employer to govern your career, and take a hold of the steering wheel.
Draw a line in the sand and decide today if you are ready to explore more for your own future. Not sure where to start or if it’s possible for you?
Let me take the stress off of you. During our 1:1 strategy session, I will help uncover those gifts and talents you have to offer outside of your current title.
After we meet, you will receive a comprehensive blueprint of what steps you can take to move forward confidently. You can book your session with me using the link in the show notes. To hit this idea home, today’s quote by William Faulkner beautifully sums up the core message of today’s episode. He says:
You cannot swim for new horizons until you have courage to lose sight of the shore.
Think about that for a second, he’s in essence saying that you cannot experience new things if you are not willing to let go of the familiar things. Pretty eye opening isn’t it?
I hope that through this message you give yourself permission to let go of security or the past and open yourself up to new opportunities and growth.
It’s been a pleasure to share this with you and I’ll see you on the next episode.
