Alright, now let’s dive into these pretty little lies you may or may not know you are telling yourself as to why you can’t achieve those goals or grow in your professional journey. Ready??? Let’s do this!

  1. FEAR OF CHANGE: Sometimes this can look like saying you are okay with change but deep down inside you’re struggling with it. Has that ever happened to you? If there is one thing I’ve learned is that change is inevitable. Whether or not we like to admit it, it’s simply reality. The best way to deal with it, learn to be adaptable. Figure out what the path to least resistance is and take small steps towards embracing the change. It’s not easy, but if we do it one step at a time it won’t be as painful.

  2. FEAR OF BEING FOUND OUT: Do you ever find yourself pretending to be happy or satisfied? Or maybe you don’t even recognize it as “pretending” because you’ve done such a good job of it that you’ve convinced yourself. You might even say you’re satisfied yet you’re pretending so no one else will find out that deep down inside it’s not reality. This can even look like imposter syndrome, where you are doubting whether or not you are qualified or capable of success and that others will find out you are an imposter. To combat this, create a list of your strengths and accomplishments to keep handy that you can refer to when you are experiencing self-doubt. Also, this is an optimal time for reflection. I recommend you periodically sit down and write out if you are truly happy in your life, if not, it’s time to really consider what it will take to change that so you can live your life with joy and intentionality.

  3. FEAR OF BEING WORTHY ENOUGH: Ever feel like you’re not worthy or not enough? Maybe you are close to achieving a goal or thinking about applying for that promotion, and you think “why me?” I couldn’t possibly be chosen for that or achieve that goal. You start to tear yourself down and find all the reasons why you are not worthy. You fill in the blank, but you probably say things like “I’M NOT ______ ENOUGH”….ring a bell? As women, I think we tend to be our own harshest critics and can I let you in on a little secret, men are exactly the opposite!!! Let’s use the promotion example, if they see an opportunity that they qualify for about 30% of the requirements, they don’t hesitate and will apply. Yet, us women, oh no, we want to have 99.9% of the qualifications to even CONSIDER applying for anything. Really ladies? I say it’s time to stop holding back, put ourselves out there and do the thing! Instead of doubting, start believing in ourselves. The question to ask ourselves here, is what will I lose or risk if I do take a leap of faith? Is it worth doing or not doing it? Evaluate your options, pick a path, and do one thing to move you forward.

  4. SOMEDAY OR LATER SYNDROME: I think if you’ve ever struggled with weight loss in your life, you are probably familiar with this one. The “someday” I should work out/give up that food or “I’ll start fresh on Monday” excuse, sound familiar? Trust me, you are not alone in this. I have put off many things in my life until an unforeseeable or unknown future. This is the perfect, I’m deferring til a better time, when things are closer to perfect, you know when the time is right. Let’s get real here, does that even exist? It’s just a lie we tell ourselves to avoid the inevitable to make a commitment to ourselves and take a step forward. How do you beat it? Set a date and have someone help you stay accountable. No more procrastination or dragging your feet. Do the dang thing friends. And if you don’t have anyone that will keep you accountable, then reach out to me and let’s set up a time to chat. No more excuses!

  5. PERFECTION: Ah…..perfection! One of my personal favorites because I struggle with this one excessively. I think it also goes hand-in-hand with analysis paralysis, any of my fellow perfectionists nodding your head in agreement? See the lie like I shared in my previous example of the “someday” theory, is also true with perfection. We convince ourselves that we will have some miraculous moment where there will be the perfect alignment or time where it’s the right time to pull the trigger on moving forward. Sound familiar? The thing is, it’s a myth, it simply doesn’t exist. Our excuses can look like, when I’m not so busy, when this certain things happen and so on. What I hope you’ll recognize is that there is no such thing as “PERFECTION” and how we move past this, is to start by again, taking one step at a time towards the goals you are working towards. Don’t try doing so much at once, because the overwhelm kicks in and you feel limited. That’s why we convince ourselves that we have to wait for a perfect time and we are simply hesitating. Go take action and be gentle on yourself in the process.

  6. I CANT AFFORD THE INVESTMENT (in time or money) - and lastly, I want to talk about one of the big resisters I see many of my friends and clients experience. Once we know we are ready to go tot he next level, we hold onto our precious resources viscously. Sometimes, we need to put in a chunk of equity to make a commitment to ourselves and our progress. This can be in the form of financial or time investments. I remember when I was working full time, raising my daughter on my own and working on earning my Bachelor’s degree for our future. It just so happened that my employer was conducting a study asking about employee satisfaction. One of my colleagues emphasized that they were overlooked for multiple promotions and was frustrated that she wasn’t given a chance to grow. The consultant asked, “what have you done to grow yourself and make yourself marketable?” My colleague replied, well I have two kids, I work full time and I just don’t have time to do anything else. The consultant turned to me and said, then why was Susie able to do that with less resources than you? We can choose to cast blame or make excuses if we like, but at the end of the day we need to prioritize what actually matters to us. If it matters, I promise you, you will find a way. If your health tanks, you will drop everything else to put taking care of yourself on the top of your list because it MATTERS. What’s so different about your time or financial investments? We prioritize the important things, so why not swap out one of the things that is not serving you in the path you want to take and invest in YOU? I know it can be hard, but I hope with these examples you will see the answer here is to be resourceful.
